The Schooner Mixed Doubles Spiel was held on January 10 and 11 with a slate of twelve teams taking part. This spiel was a team entry event and was run in a draw format. Play got underway on Friday with round one seeing eight of the twelve teams competing while the remaining four had byes to the second round. The first games took the ice at 6pm and saw Justin Humphrey and Val MacIntyre take on Bryant Cormier and Kristen Bell as well as Gordie Cormier and Helen Joyce facing David and Lori Rich. MacIntyre/Humphrey and Joyce/G. Cormier were victorious and stayed in the ‘A’ division and playing their second games later that same evening, while the losing teams fell to play on the ‘B’ division the following morning.
The next games saw Brittni Delorenzo and Walter Nichols defeat Keith MacEachern and Lynn Kelly while Russell Fitzgerald and daughter Meranda Bullen were taken down by Jenna MacNeil and Stephen Leslie.
Winners from the 6pm games were retaking the ice at 8pm to face teams that had drawn a bye in round one. First it was MacIntyre/Humphrey taking on and defeating Kevin Gouthro and Samantha Livingstone while Brian and Kelley Laughlin had a win over Joyce/G. Cormier. The final games of the evening saw MacNeil/Leslie win their second game in a row over Marnie MacDonald and Benito Delorenzo and Julie Cormier and Robbie Biron defeat Brittni Delorenzo/Nichols.
Play got underway on Saturday morning at 10am with the first round of the ‘B’ division seeing all losing teams from Friday evening play. With the spiel being a double knockout affair, any loss from this point on in ‘B’ would mean your spiel would be over. The 10am games saw Kelly/MacEachern defeat Joyce/G. Cormier while Livingstone/Gouthro were winners and eliminated Fitzgerald/Bullen. Both winners would move on to face one another a little later in the day. Next we had Bell/B. Cormier taking on MacDonald/Ben Delorenzo while team Rich faced off against Britt Delorenzo/Nichols. Bell/B. Cormier along with Team Rich were winners and would retake the ice immediately to play against each other while Gouthro and Livingstone were taking on Kelly/MacEachern at the same time on the opposite sheet. Winners would move on to face the losers of ‘A’ division semi-final games taking place at 1:45 that had MacIntyre/Humphrey facing Team Laughlin and J. Cormier/Biron taking on MacNeil/Leslie. Winners of this game would advance to the ‘A’ final and losers would move to continue play in the aforementioned ‘B’ division tilt.
Bell/Cormier had earlier defeated Team Rich and would face Team Laughlin, who had lost their ‘A’ semi-final, for a chance to play for the ‘B’ division title. MacNeil/Leslie defeated J. Cormier/Biron to drop them to ‘B’ to face Livingstone/Gouthro, also playing for a chance to get into the final in the ‘B’ division. The teams competing in the ‘A’ final were now determined with MacIntyre/Humphrey set to face MacNeil/Leslie. The ‘B’ division semi saw J. Cormier/Biron along with Bell/B Cormier as the winners and would now face each other for the ‘B’ title.
Both finals were scheduled for 4pm on Saturday. The ‘A’ division game saw Jenna MacNeil and Stephen Leslie take the win and the overall top spot in the spiel while Val MacIntyre and Justin Humphrey had to settle for second spot. The ‘B’ division title was won by Julia Cormier and Robbie Biron after they defeated Kristen Bell and Bryant Cormier. Overall a great weekend of competition. Congratulations to our winners and thank you to all who took part.
Thanks also to everyone who helped to plan, organize and run the event. Thanks also to the ice crew for great playing conditions, to the bartenders and to anyone else who helped in any way. Don’t forget to sign up for the next doubles event, the Jackie Pearson Memorial Open Team Entry, taking place March 14th and 15th.
