The final curling event of the 2024-25 season, the John Bonaparte Memorial Closing Spiel, was held from April 10th to 12th, 2025. This event is open to both members and guests and no curling experience was required. Curlers chose to curl one six end game on either Thursday or Friday and then played one six end and one four end game on Saturday. A total of twelve teams took part, four in the Thursday division and eight on Friday.
During the three days of curling we had some great games and there was lots of fun. It came down to the final games on Saturday night before we could determine a winner. The Carrie Cress rink was the only team left that could catch team Lynn Kelly but they had to not only win their game but win all ends in the four-end affair. Cress was facing the Stephen Leslie rink. While Cress was able to defeat Leslie she wasn’t able to win enough ends and fell short on points to Kelly. Team Kelly, with 36 points, was our spiel winner. Cress was able to lock up second place. Skip Lynn Kelly was joined by Frances Ford, Bev Young and Alison Grapes. Congratulations ladies. Skip Carrie Cress was aided by Wally MacDonald, Justin Humphrey and Robbie Biron. It was nice to have Wally MacDonald back curling at the Schooner again. Third place in the spiel was the Cormier Rink with Skip Gordie Cormier, Bernadette Cormier, Dennis Cormier and Helen Joyce. It was also great having Dennis and Helen back on the Schooner ice again as well. Thank you also to Kristal Coffin and Sean MacPherson for once again joining us to curl at the club.
Saturday, the final day of the curling season for 2024-25, was a great day with not only a lot of good curling but there was lots of great entertainment, great food and loads of fun. Gordie Cormier brought his guitar and he and others entertained everyone for the afternoon. All curlers and guests were treated to a hot dog bar with lots of toppings including some delicious chili made by Marnie MacDonald. Dessert was provided by Bernadette Cornier in the form of chocolate chip cookie squares and score bar squares. On Friday evening, Lori and Dave Rich brought a snack tray for everyone to enjoy. Thank you to everyone who brought food for everyone to enjoy.
After curling was done we had another great party with DJ Jimmy and, as is the norm, Jimmy and the Schooner faithful partied into the wee hours of the night.
We want to thank everyone, especially those who joined us from outside the Schooner ranks, for taking part and thank you to everyone who helped out in organizing and running the spiel in any way. It was another great success. Thank you also to our sponsor, Rusty’s Trading Post, for again supporting our club.
So that put the wraps on another great curling season at the Schooner Curling Club. It was a great year and we want to thank all the Schooner members and friends of the club for making it that way. On to 2025-26.
