Schooner Curling Club Golf Day 2018
The 2018 edition of Schooner Golf, held on Saturday, June 23, was a huge success with one of the largest ever number of participants, great weather, a delicious meal and loads of fun. A total of fifteen teams took to the course at Alderdale Greens and a few more people joined us just for dinner. All golfers were presented with a gift bag upon arrival at the course that included a couple of golf balls and tees, a granola bar for energy to finish the round, a bottle of water to stay hydrated and, of course, a package of tissues for those who weren't so successful to dry their tears. The day of golf started out with each team member taking two shots to try and gain points for their respective teams by chipping and/or putting golf balls at a special game board that had a variety of point totals for different openings. The winner of the preliminary event was the foursome of Barb Mercer, Dave Mercer, Helen Leudy and Jason Groves. The nine holes of golf was played in a scramble format and was won by Gordie Cormier, Brian Laughlin, Bill Farr and Gary Butler with a score of three under par. Along the course there were a few other challenges including best drive for men and women and closest to the hole on a par three for men and women. On the men's side, Russell Fitzgerald had best drive while Robert Black won closest to the hole. On the women's side, Joanne Hunsten won both challenges having both the best drive and coming closest to the hole. A final competition for golfers was setup back at the club where teams were tasked with pitching at a variety of targets in the field next to our parking lot. Again, each player took two shots to try and earn points for their teams. The foursome of Richard Lorway, Bryant Cormier, Lonnie Howe and Ray Smith were the winners of this competition.
After all the golfing and other competitions were complete, everyone was treated to a delicious steak BBQ at the club. There was grilled pepperoni for an appetizer while you waited for your steak to be cooked and there was a great selection of sides to go along with the main course. Dinner was capped off with strawberry shortcake for dessert. When dinner was done there were the prize presentations to our winners and everyone was entered into a bonus prize draw for a free round of golf at the Lingan Golf and Country Club compliments of Lingan's Lonnie Howe. Winners of the draw for these prizes were Gordie Cormier, Bill Farr, Rick Kelly and Matt Nearing. It was a great way to end a fantastic day.
A huge thank you goes out to Lynn Kelly and Gary Landry who organize and run the event, to Brian Laughlin for once again manning the grill and cooking all the steaks, to Frances, Georgette, Joe and Yvonne who helped get things ready for dinner at the club on Saturday and to everyone who showed up for prep on Friday night, to Lonnie Howe for the green fees to Lingan, to the bartenders who provided the means for some of us to drown our sorrows and, last but certainly not least, to everyone who took part, especially those from outside the Schooner membership, and made Schooner Golf 2018 a great day and a huge success. We hope to see you all again next year.
