The kickoff to the 2022-23 season, the Ray Cameron Memorial Opening Spiel, took place from November 3-5. There were twelve teams that took part, six in the Thursday/Saturday division and six in the Friday/Saturday division. This is the second year we have dedicated the opening curling event of the season to the memory of Ray, a former Schooner member who was not only a wonderful curler but also gave countless hours of time to the Schooner Club, holding the positions of president and treasurer on the club's executive for a number of years and also was a dedicated volunteer in other aspects such as helping with the ice. Ray was also a great person who was loved by all who knew him.
When play got underway on Thursday, November 3, Cape Breton was still seeing some very unseasonably high temperatures and that carried through most of the weekend. That really affected the ice at the club, especially on Saturday when the temperatures topped 20 degrees celsius. With our old building, that sort of temperature is going to have an effect and made the rocks slow and the ice a bit more slippery underfoot. That didn't stop the participants from having some great games and lots of fun. Also, on Saturday, all curlers were treated to some delicious Chinese food to help keep them fueled up for the two games everyone played that day. After all the curling was done it was the team of Gordie Cormier, Cheryl MacKinnon, Lonnie Howe and Justin Humphrey that were at the top of the pack followed closely by the foursome of Cal Thistle, Greg Wall, Bob Smith and Tommy Youden in second. Both the Cormier rink and the Thistle rink were undefeated on the weekend but Cormier was able to sneak past Thistle for first with a big win in his final game, taking all ends except one that was blanked. After curling was done for the day we changed our curling shoes for dance shoes and partied the night away with music by DJ Jimmy. Congratulations to our winners and a big thank you to everyone who took part, especially the curlers who were new to the sport and were joining us for the first time. Thank you also to Julia and Lynn and the entire bonspiel committee for all their work in organizing and running the event, to the ice crew for working hard under demanding conditions to keep the ice in playable shape, the bartenders and everyone else who helped out in any way to make this spiel such a wonderful event. Without the help of countless volunteers, these events simply cannot happen. So now the curling season is officially underway and we couldn't have asked for a better start. Enjoy the year everyone and we hope to see you all back next season for the third annual Ray Cameron Memorial.
