February 7 and 8!!

The annual Sweetheart Women’s Spiel was held at the club on February 7th and 8th and was another huge success. A capacity roster of twelve teams took part in the two-day event, each playing two, six-end games and one four-end game. Points were awarded for wins as well as ends won.
Play got underway on Friday evening with all teams seeing their first action on this night. All curlers and guests were treated to a wonderful wine and cheese reception on Friday as well. A big thank you goes out to Martin Campbell, Russell Fitzgerald and Stephen Leslie for supplying the wine for everyone and to all who brought dips, trays, sweets, etc. for everyone to enjoy and fill up on. The party went pretty late on Friday. Also on Friday evening we had a draw to the button completion where each team selected a thrower to deliver one rock which was then measure for distance from the button and recorded. Prizes available where drinks at the Schooner bar supplied by Kevin Gouthro. Congratulations to the Terrie Walker rink and the Lisa MacDonald rink for winning the prizes and a big thank you to Kevin for sponsoring.
Play got underway again on Saturday morning. A light breakfast was available, coffee, muffins, etc. and then later there was soup and a light lunch. Thanks to Jenna and Frances for the delicious soup. All curlers were also treated to a Chinese dinner on Saturday evening after curling, compliments of donations from the Schooner men.
Once all teams had played their matches and points were tallied, Lisa MacDonald’s foursome were crowned spiel champs, amassing a perfect 3-0 record and a total of 38 points. Skip Lisa was joined by Emma MacNamara, Jennifer Langois and Katie MacLeod. Meranda Fitzgerald-Bullen was second, only beating out Terrie Walker’s Team by plus/minus. Meranda was 3-0 and had a 30-point total while Walker was 2-1 with 30 points. Meranda had a +9 rating over three games and that was enough to beat out Terrie’s +5 to jump ahead in the standings. Meranda was joined by Stephanie Burgoyne, Stella Cameron and Susanne Ross. Jo MacGillivary, Kathy Kavanagh and Virginia Poirier joined Terrie. Rounding out the top five for the weekend were the Alison Grapes rink in fourth and the Carrie Cress rink in fifth. Alison was joined by Kat O’Hagan, Susan Belmore-Vermes and Nathalie Keroack while skip Carrie was aided by Jenna MacNeil, Kristen Bell and Jennifer Brain. Congratulations to all of our winners and thank you to everyone for taking part. In the Schooner Sweetheart there are no losers. Winners got the Sweetheart jackets but everyone who took part got to pick a prize from the well-stocked prize table. As part of the closing ceremonies and prize presentations, Martin Campbell and Russell Fitzgerald presented long-time spiel organizer, Lynn Kelly, with a commemorative plaque and a bouquet of flowers in honor of all the work she did in past years to make the Sweetheart successful and grow it into the great event it is today. While Lynn still curled in the event, she had taken a step back this year from here organizer role. Thank you to Lynn for all her dedication and hard work for the club and this event in particular. We also want to thank Bill Farr and Farrside Holdings for sponsoring this year. Long time sponsor, Compu Clone Computer Solutions, was sold by Bill last year and is now under new ownership. Bill stepped up again with a sponsorship through Farrside. Thanks also goes out to everyone who helped to organize and run the event, to everyone who contributed items, food, drink and anything else, to the hard working bartenders, ice crew and cleaning staff and to anyone else who helped in any way. Without the kindness and generosity of our volunteers and sponsors, events like this would not be possible.
So that puts the wraps on another Sweetheart Spiel. Thank you once again to all of the women curlers who took part. You all gave us some great curling to watch all weekend, we hope you had fun doing it and we hope to see you all again next year for the 2026 Schooner Sweetheart Spiel.
