The Schooner Club saw one of its premier events of the season, the Ladies Sweetheart Spiel, once again take place in February. A full slate of twelve teams took part and were representing the Schooner and Sydney Curling Clubs. In the end it was the Julia Cormier rink from Schooner that ran away with the event and took first place overall. Cormier’s foursome went undefeated in their three games and only dropped five ends in total over the event to distance themselves from the rest of the field. Skip Julia was joined by Meranda Fitzgerald-Bullen, Val MacIntyre and Samantha Livingstone. The rest of field was pretty close with second place being shared by two teams with identical totals, fourth place having an equal amount of points but only falling short on plus/minus and fifth place on one point behind. The second place tie was between two Schooner rinks, the Crystal Coffin rink and team Carrie Cress. Both had an equal 24 points and a plus five ranking. Skip Crystal was joined by Jenna MacLellan, Linda Hayes-Martell and Julissa Rudderham. Skip Carrie was aided by Millie Detchevery, Sarah Boudreau and Hillary Tatlock. Fourth place, also sporting a total of 24 points but only a plus one ranking, was the Marie Young rink out of the Sydney Curling Club. Marie was making a return to the sweetheart after missing last year’s event. Skip Young was joined by Joan Latimer, Paula Jessome-MacRae and Diane Penny. Rounding out the top five was another Schooner rink, this time skipped by Lori Rich. Lori Finished on point behind Team Young with a total of 23 and a plus five rating. Lori was joined by Jess Lever, Ashley Foster and Kaitlin Monahan. Team rich narrowly edged out two other rinks, the Jenna MacNeil rink and the Bernadette Cormier rink, both also having a total of 23 points each but both were worse on plus/minus. A testament to the quality of teams and the parity as well was that eleven out of the twelve teams finished with twenty points or more for the event.
While this years Sweetheart enjoyed some great curling on the ice, it’s just as much about the food and the fun enjoyed by everyone was well. Teams dressed for the event in their best Valentine’s themed outfits. There were Candy Grams available to be purchased and delivered by Ted E. Bear to your favourite valentine and, of course, all curlers and guests were treated to lots of great food throughout the weekend. On Friday there was a wine and cheese reception that was once again sponsored by spiel founders Russell Fitzgerald and Martin Campbell and on Saturday there was lunch for everyone to fuel them through the day and then, towards the end, all curlers were served a Chinese Food dinner from the New Moon Restaurant. No one can say they went away hungry unless they really wanted to.
Congratulations once again to our winners and a big thank you to all the ladies who took part in the spiel, especially those who joined us from outside the Schooner ranks. Thank you to spiel sponsor Bill Farr and Farrside Holdings Limited and to Russell and Martin for providing the wine and cheese. Thank you to Linda, Crystal and Mike for running the Candy Grams and thank you also to everyone who brought food to share and to everyone who helped plan and run the event as well as anyone else who helped out in any way. Without your kind donations and your giving of time we would not be able to hold great events like this. We also want to send a special thanks to Ginger for taking time from her busy schedule to once again join us at the Sweetheart. We hope to see everyone back again next year for another great Sweetheart Spiel in 2027.
