Congratulations to our winner, the Nadine Neima-Drover Rink. Second place was the Samantha Campbell Rink and third was the Barb Cooke Rink.
The Annual Schooner Sweetheart Women's Spiel took place at the club from February 8-9 and was another huge success. A total of ten teams took part, down from last year's twelve teams, after it was found that the twelve team schedule was just too tight to be played in the timeframe we have. Play got underway at 5pm on Friday when the first draw took the ice and went all evening. Also on Friday, Curlers and guests were treated to a wine and cheese with a variety of dips and other treats brought by various members. Russell Fitzgerald and Martin Campbell, keeping with the tradition they started during the very first Sweetheart Spiel, bought the wine. A big thank you to them and to everyone who brought the delicious treats we all enjoyed very much.
Games got underway early on Saturday with the first draw starting at 9am. All teams would be playing two games on Saturday. Each draw was scheduled for two hours as this would allow plenty of time to play a six end game and also allow for ice maintenance and any other small delays that might crop up. After draw two, Samantha Campbell had a small lead over Nadine Neima-Drover, even though Campbell had a win and a tie and Drover had two wins. With points being awarded for wins as well as for each end won, we can see the importance of maximizing the number of ends you do get in an event like this. Barb Cooke was also still in the mix and sat in third place, two points out of second and two and a half points out of first. Cooke would be the first to play her third draw, taking the ice at 3pm while both Campbell and Neima-Drover would be on at 5pm. Cooke put some pressure on the other leaders and got eleven of a possible fifteen points to sit in the lead with twenty nine total and a plus twelve rating. Nadine Neima-Drover was taking on the Miranda Fitzgerald rink in their final draw and Samantha Campbell would face Carrie Cress on the other sheet. Campbell and Cress had a hard fought match that was tied coming home in the final end. Campbell would prevail and score with hammer to win, taking nine of the available fifteen points, passing Cooke in the standings by just a half a point, but it wouldn't be enough as Neima-Drover was also a winner in her final game, getting eleven points and edging out Campbell for first place. Campbell settled for second and Cooke took third. Joining Nadine in the win was Andrea Roach, Ashley Rose and Kelsey Hamilton. Samantha Campbell had Debby Murray, Allison Grapes and Colleen MacLeod while Barb Cooke was joined by Ruth Morrison, Gretchen Landry and Ruth MacIntosh. Rounding out the top five teams were the Marie Young Rink with skip Marie, Joan Latimer, Erica Gillis and Dianne Penney and the Joanne Hunston rink with Joanne, Jill Ramsey, Paul MacPhee and Mary-Lou Andrea.
After curling was all done for the weekend the curlers and guests at the club were treated to a delicious roast beef dinner catered by Tommy and Laura Young. Dinner was compliments of donations by the Schooner men and was also served by some of the men who were in attendance. During dinner, Russell Fitzgerald drew the winner of an even split that was sold during the afternoon and the winner was Laura MacIntyre. After dinner and desert, the prizes were presented to our winners, the Neima-Drover rink. They received tote bags donated by Miranda Fitzgerald as well as the coveted Sweetheart jackets, compliments of spiel Sponsor, Compu-Clone Computer Solutions of Sydney. There were prizes for all curlers who took part and each of the ladies got a chance to pick from the prize table as their name was drawn from the hat. Each curler got to choose from a wide variety of prizes that included gift cards, fashion accessories, neck massagers, wine and much more. Thanks to all the ladies who did the shopping and picked up the great prizes.
In the end it was another hugely successful Sweetheart Spiel once again. A big thank you to its main coordinator, Lynn Kelly, and to everyone who helped her in both planning and running the event. Thank you to our sponsor, Compu-Clone Computer Solutions and to Russell Fitzgerald and Martin Campbell for their contributions to the Wine and Cheese on Friday. Thanks to Tommy and Laura Young for the great meal, to the Schooner men for their donations and help serving and to everyone who brought the great food we enjoyed all weekend. Thanks to our bartenders, ice crew, housekeeping committee and to everyone else who worked hard and helped out all weekend. And finally, a huge thank you to all the ladies who took part in the spiel. We hope you had fun and will join us again next February for the 2020 Sweetheart Spiel.
And don't forget to visit the Schooner Club on Facebook and check out some of the photos from the weekend. A lot of the curlers really got into the spirit and there were lots of great outfits.
