Triples Curling, an exciting new discipline that has been developed by Curling Canada, is proving very popular with many who give it a try and that certainly was the case when the Schooner club hosted a spiel using the new format on March 21 and 22.
As its name suggests, curlers compete in teams of 3 when playing this format. All ends consist of 6 shots thrown per team, with each player throwing 2 shots. Unless otherwise indicated, Curling Canada’s rules apply to triples, including those related to the free guard zone.
The scoring is a little different than in regular curling with the games consisting of 3 ‘Sets’ of 2 ends each with each set almost being like a 2-end ‘Mini-Game’, The team with the highest score after 2 ends in each set wins that set. However, if the score is tied at the completion of the set, it becomes a ‘Split Set’. Each ‘Set’ is assigned a point value in the rules. Curlers play each of the 3 positions (i.e., Lead, Middle, and Skip) for one set of the game. Teams can determine which player starts in each position during set 1. However, from that point onward the rotation of players must be as set out in the rules. After each set, the players all move forward one position. If the game is tied after set 3, a team draw-to‐the‐button tie-breaker is used. If both teams finish the tie-breaker with the same number of points, each team identifies 1 curler to throw a single measured draw-to‐the-button for the win (with sweeping). While is all sounds a little complicated, it really isn’t that bad and curlers in the spiel, after a little confusion in the beginning, caught on quickly.
Play got underway on Friday evening with all 12 teams taking part in games that were expected to take about an hour and half to play. With some minor exceptions, that time frame was maintained pretty closely, even when games went into an overtime draw.
The first draw of the spiel saw the Three Musketeers, Lori and David Rich and Bernadette Cormier, take on A Rose Between Two Thorns, Paul ‘Delio’ Delasandro, Natalie Maglario and Bryan Nash, while PBG (Pier Boy Gang), made up of Benito Delorenzo, Brian Laughlin and Russell Fitzgerald, took on Two Sinners and a Saint, Stephen Leslie, Jenna MacNeil and Dame Rudderham. The Three Musketeers and Two Sinners and a Saint were winners and would stay to play further in the ‘A’ division while losers of the first games would drop to ‘C’. Other games that evening saw Three Sheets to the Wind, Gordie Cormier, Kirk McNeil and Terrance Nicholson, defeat Snap Crackle and Pop, Alison Grapes, Kat O’Hagan and Mark Monohan, The Bermuda Triangle, Meranda Bullen, Walter Nichols and Val MacIntyre, defeat The Hobbits made up of Justin Humphrey, Sam Livingstone and Lynn Kelly, Duck Duck Goose, Leo Fraser, Marnie MacDonald and Frances Ford, defeat Third Wheel, Julia Cormier, Robbie Biron and Kevin Gouthro, and finally The Three Stooges, Bill Farr, Jennifer Brain and Bob Smith, defeat The Three Amigos, Keith MacEachern, Bryant Cormier and Kristen Bell. It was a great start to the event with minimal confusion given that this was a brand new format with new rules to play by.
Play got underway on Saturday morning at around 10am With the first play in the ‘C Division. Games carried on all day until we made it to the finals of the four available divisions. Curlers and guests were treated to delicious pizza in the afternoon that was generously donated by Kenny’s Pizza Whitney Pier. By the end of the day Saturday, after a lot of great curling and fun, we had all of our championship games set. In the ‘A’ Division saw Two Sinners and a Saint taking on Duck Duck Goose. Duck Duck Goose had defeated The Three Stooges in an overtime draw and then The Bermuda Triangle to make it to the main event while Two Sinners and a Saint had a slightly easier path, only having to win one game on Saturday, that being against The Three Musketeers. The ‘B’ final we had The Three Stooges taking on The Bermuda Triangle. After losing in the ‘A’ division, the Bermuda Triangle defeated the Three Musketeers and the Three Stooges took out Three Sheets to the Wind in a game that needed to be decided by an overtime draw. The ‘C’ Division would see PBG play against the Hobbits for that title. PBG had earlier defeated A Rose Between Two Thorns to get there while the Hobbits needed to Snap Crackle and Pop and The Three Amigos to earn their spot. The final division, the ‘D’ division, would see Third Wheel play A Rose Between Two Thorns in its final. Third Wheel didn’t have to win a game to get to this final, the draw brought them without a victory, while A Rose Between Two Thorns did have to defeat Snap Crackle and Pop to punch their ticket to the final game.
Once all the rocks were thrown in all of the final games we crowned our winners in Schooner’s inaugural Triples Spiel. The ‘A’ Winner was Two Sinners and a Saint (Stephen, Jenna and Dane), the ‘B’ title was taken by The Three Stooges (Bill, Jennifer and Bob), ‘C’ was won by PBG (Russell, Brian and Benito) while Third Wheel (Julia, Robbie and Kevin) rounded out the winners by taking the ‘D’ title. All winners and runners up were rewarded with great prizes that they could choose from on the prize table.
Overall, a great event for the Schooner Club with a lot of positive feedback from everyone who took part. It’s very likely that this spiel will return to the Schooner calendar in years to come.
A big thank you to everyone who took part, to everyone who helped organize and run the spiel, to Kristen Bell for making the rules posters to make it easier for everyone to keep things strait and to everyone like ice crew, bartenders, housekeeping and so on who always make the events at the Schooner club so great. We hope to see everyone back next season for the second annual Schooner Triples Spiel.
