The Turkey Spiel, a Schooner Holiday tradition, ran from December 12-14 and was a huge success. This spiel was filled to its capacity with a total of 16 teams and 64 curlers taking part. Teams were split into two divisions, one starting on Thursday evening and one on Friday, with all teams meeting on Saturday for two games, one six and one four end tilt. After all the great curling was finished, the Bryant Cormier rink stood as champs and took home the Holiday Turkey. Cormier actually started the spiel with a loss, garnering only six points in that tilt, but came on strong on Saturday with two big wins to vault him into first overall and finishing one point ahead of second place finisher Brian Laughlin. Laughlin’s foursome took home Holiday hams. Joining skip Bryant in the victory was Robbie Biron, Jennifer Haigh and Joel MacDonald. It was great to see Jenn and Joel, both former club members, back playing on Schooner ice. Joining skip Brian in second place was Kelley Laughlin, Marnie MacDonald and Georgette Sparkes. Rounding out the top three was the Russell Fitzgerald rink with Skip Russell, Terrance Nicholson, Paul MacDonald and Shelley Campbell. Their prize was delicious chocolates.
On Saturday, everyone was treated to a build your own sandwich bar and two kinds of soup, turkey vegetable, made by Jenna MacNeil, and beef and barley, made by Frances Ford. Jenna and Stephen Leslie also provided some sliced turkey for the sandwich bar and some meat and cheese trays for later in the evening. Thank you to Stephen, Jenna and Frances for the delicious eats. Thanks also to Rose Gale for the lemon loaf for desert. It was delicious as well.
After the curling formalities were over, DJ Jimmy took over and the party started to celebrate the season. A good crowd stayed around and partied well into the night in true Schooner fashion.
Congratulations to our 2024 Turkey Spiel winners and thank you to everyone who took part, especially those who joined us from outside the Schooner membership ranks. Thanks again to everyone who provided food for the curlers on Saturday and a big thank you to everyone who helped in organizing and running the event. Without the generosity of the volunteers at the club events like this could not happen. And last but certainly not least, a huge thank you to our sponsor, Rusty’s Trading Post of Membertou, for your generous support. Help from the business community is another important part of maintaining the club and our events.
So another Turkey Spiel goes in the books. We hope to see everyone back again next Christmas when we will once again will celebrate this long time Schooner Tradition.
