The Schooner Club’s Holiday tradition, the Turkey Spiel, was held on December 4th to 6th with twelve teams taking part, four in the Thursday/Saturday division and eight on the Friday/Saturday side. Each team played one six-end game on their opening evening of choice and then played one six-end and one four-end game on Saturday. Saturday would also see all curlers and guests treated to some great home-made soup and a build-a-sandwich bar with lots of choices for meat, toppings and bread.
Once all the rocks were thrown it was the Carrie Cress rink who was in top spot and took home the Holiday Turkeys. Cress went 3-0 in the spiel but in the last game was only able to score in one end, enough points to overcome the deficit they were in, and garner six points, three for the end and three for the win. Those six points gave team Cress 28 points total and a plus ten in differential, enough to edge out the Julia Cormier rink who also had 28 points but only a plus four differential. Cormier’s team won Holiday hams, sporting a 2-1 record, their only blemish being a loss to the Val MacIntyre rink.
Heading into the final games Saturday, Cress, MacIntyre and the Brian Laughlin rink were all counting 22 points. Cress had her come-from-behind win but both Laughlin and MacIntyre lost, getting only one end each and three points in their respective games. MacIntyre was still able to stay in third place overall with twenty five points, edging out Laughlin, also with twenty five points, by point differential. MacIntyre won chocolates while Laughlin finished out of the prizes in fourth place. Rounding out the top five was the Alison Grapes squad, also with twenty five points but dropping due to point differential.
Joining Skip Carrie in the win was Jenn Brain, Brian Nash and Sarah Boudreau. Skip Julia Cormier had only three players total, being joined by Brittni Delorenzo and Meranda Bullen. They relied on spares to fill out the roster all weekend. In third place, Val MacIntyre also had a shortened squad when two of her players withdrew at the last minute. Val and mate Kristen Bell also relied on fill-in players. Skip Brian Laughlin was joined by Russell Fitzgerald, Marnie MacDonald and Paul MacDonald and, rounding out the top five, skip Alison had Kat O’Hagan, Robbie Biron and Trevor O’Hagen with her.
Once curling was done the fun didn’t stop. There was a Holiday dance at the club on Saturday night with everyone’s favorite DJ, Jimmy MacKinnon. Jimmy played well into the night while the Schooner faithful partied and celebrated the upcoming Holiday season. At one point, a number of people went back on the ice for a draw to the button using hams instead of curling rocks. Sliders were even taped to the hams once participants realized that it was two difficult to get them down the ice without the aid of the sliders. Great fun.
A big thank you goes out to everyone who took part and to everyone who helped out with the planning and running of the spiel in any way. Thank you to Jenna MacNeil and Frances Ford for making the delicious soup, to Bernadette Cormier for the squares and to everyone else who brought food and treats to share. It was another great event at the Schooner Club and a great way to enter into the Holiday season.
