One of the most anticipated events of the season at the club is always the lady's Sweetheart Spiel and this year's affair didn't disappoint. Ten teams, made up of ladies from the Schooner Club, The Sydney Curling Club and the Baddeck Curling Club, competed in this year’s spiel. The weekend saw some great curling and a tight race for first wasn't decided until the last rocks were thrown. At least six teams were still in the running for first overall heading into the final draw on Saturday. But what makes this spiel so great is that, as important as the curling is, the social atmosphere and fun of the event is even more important. Friday night saw all the curlers and guests treated to wine and cheese, sponsored in part by the Schooner Club along with club member Martin Campbell. Saturday, after a hard day of curling, the ladies were treated to a delicious dinner compliments of donations made by the Schooner men.
We would like to congratulate Marie Young and her rink, mate Joan Latimer, second Frances Ford and lead Jean Smith on their first place finish and for winning the Sweetheart jackets. Young and her squad were undefeated for the weekend but still had to get all available points in their final game in order to lock up first place and were able to accomplish that difficult feat, even against a tough rink skipped by Janet Confiant, who, going into the game, was also in the running for first place. Second place was taken by Baddeck skip Evelyn Hebb and her rink, mate Heather MacIntosh, second Rachel Kelly and lead Margie Brett. Hebb’s rink faced an uphill battle after dropping their first draw on Friday but were able to gain two victories on Saturday, the second against the Georgie Granchelli rink, leaders after the second round. Granchelli won her first two but after dropping the third draw she fell to fourth place overall. Skip Granchelli was joined by mate Barb Thistle, second Linda MacNeil and lead Sheila Profit. Third place overall was captured by skip Elaine Arseneau, who also had a climb back into the top part of the standings after dropping game one. Skip Arseneau was joined by mate Shannon Odo, second Janet Gallivan and lead Lorraine MacGibbon. Also playing for the Arseneau rink as a spare was Kelley Laughlin who filled in when mate Shannon Odo fell ill. Rounding out the top five finishers was the Judy Bailey Rink with Skip Bailey, Mate Raylene DeJeet, second Georgette Sparkes and lead Amy Sparkes. Congratulations and thank you to all the ladies who took part.
We would also like to thank, as always, all volunteers who helped out in any way. Thanks to Brian Laughlin, Wayne “Bull” Bonnell and all the ice crew members for providing great ice all weekend. Thank you to Martin Campbell for his generous donation to Friday night’s refreshments and thanks to Russell Fitzgerald who collected for and helped coordinated Saturday night’s dinner. Thank you also to Lynn Kelly, Janet Gallivan and anyone else who helped organize and coordinate the spiel. The club would also like to thank Corporate sponsor Compu Clone Computer Solutions who have been supporting the Sweetheart Spiel for a few years now.
See you all next year at the Sweetheart!
